We weten pas echt
wanneer we weten

Nothing is worth more than this day.
You cannot relive yesterday.
Tomorrow is still beyond your reach.

Now I become myself. It's taken
Time, many years and places;
I have been dissolved and shaken,
Worn other people's faces,
Run madly, as if Time were there,
Terribly old, crying a warning,
"Hurry, you will be dead before—"
(What? Before you reach the morning?
Or the end of the poem is clear?
Or love safe in the walled city?)
Now to stand still, to be here,
Feel my own weight and density!

A truly good book teaches me better than to read it.
I must soon lay it down, and commence living on its hint.
What I began by reading, I must finish by acting.

Tomorrow is the most important thing in life.
Comes into us at midnight very clean.
It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands.
It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.

Heb je ooit stil gezeten
met gesloten ogen
en de stroom van je gedachten geobserveerd?
Heb je ooit je geest zien werken?
Of beter gezegd,
heeft je geest ooit zichzelf zien werken,
gewoon om te zien
wat je gedachten zijn,
wat je gevoelens zijn,
hoe je naar bomen kijkt,
en naar bloemen,
naar de vogels en mensen,
hoe je een suggestie beantwoordt
of reageert op een nieuw idee.
Heb je dit ooit gedaan?

I thought about how odd it is for billions of people to be alive,
yet not one of them is really quite sure of what makes people people.
The only activities I could think of that humans do that have no animal equivalent were smoking, body-building and writing.
That’s not much, considering how special we seem to think we are.

Ik probeer niet stil te staan,
te blijven stromen.
Niet alleen fysiek,
vooral geestelijk.
Weinig moetens
en veel willens en mogens.
Ik zie wel wat er onderweg gebeurt.

Simplicity, is what we need
And I know it in my heart
So many choices make us think we need
What we haven't got
I've been blessed, by you
I've been tested, by an angel
I've been blessed, by you
And I know and I believe
There's a way out to the sea of happiness
And if I knew what Buddha taught
And would my wings unfold
And if I had all that I want
Could I let it go
I've been blessed, by you
I've been tested, by an angel
I've been blessed, by you
And I know and I believe
There's a way out to the sea of happiness
And sometimes I feel I'm learning to crawl
Like I'm still learning how to love
And sometimes I feel like I'm losing it all
But I know there must be some way we can rise above

Sing Me Back Home before I die
The warden led a prisoner down the hallway to his doom
I stood up to say good-bye like all the rest
And I heard him tell the warden just before he reached my cell
'Let my guitar playing friend do my request.' (Let him...)
Sing me back home with a song I used to hear
Make my old memories come alive
Take me away and turn back the years
Sing Me Back Home before I die
I recall last Sunday morning a choir from off the street
Came in to sing a few old gospel songs
And I heard him tell the singers 'There's a song my mama sang.
Could I hear it once before you move along?' (won't you...)
Sing me back home with a song I used to hear
Make my old memories come alive
Take me away and turn back the years
Sing Me Back Home before I die

Everything Is a Present
At age 108, Holocaust survivor Alice Herz Sommer still practices piano for 3 hours every day. At age 104, she had a book written about her life: "A Garden Of Eden In Hell." At age 83, she had cancer. Alice survived the concentration camps through her music, her optimism and her gratitude for the small things that came her way - a smile, a kind word, the sun. When asked about the secret of her longevity, Alice says: "I look where it is good."
"I know about the bad, but I look at the good thing."
"This I learned, to be thankful for everyting."
"Hatred eats the soul of the hater, not the hated."
