No one ever talks about the
exhaustion. The effort. The grit. The anxiety. The sadness. No one
really talks about how grueling it can be to turn pain into lessons. To
keep growing when we want to shut down. To make changes when we have no
energy left. To feel our pain when we have never done so before.
No on talks about how hard this all is. It’s important. It’s beautiful. And its life changing, but I hope this validates the reality behind it all. I hope you know you aren’t alone.
I hope we all realize that when we say things are hard it’s an understatement. To become aware of our minds, to challenge ourselves, to show up in our relationships, to have patience with our kids - its hard, exhausting work. And it’s worth it. It’s so worth it. This is the work that brings us to the other side. That brings back joy. Relief. Peace. Change. But if you are in the midst of it, you are not alone.

Each
time the losses and deceptions of life teach us about impermanence, they bring
us closer to the truth.
When you fall from a great height, there is only one
possible place to land: on the ground—the ground of truth.
And if you have
the understanding that comes from spiritual practice, then falling is in no way
a disaster, but the discovery of an inner refuge.

Let them judge you.
Let them misunderstand you.
Let them gossip about you.
Their opinions aren’t your problems.
You stay kind, committed to love, and free in your authenticity.
No matter what they do or say, don’t you dare doubt your worth or the beauty of your truth.
Just keep shining like you do.

We have a habit of running after things, and this habit has been transmitted to us by our parents and ancestors. We don’t feel fulfilled in the here and now, and so we run after all kinds of things we think will make us happier. We sacrifice our life chasing after objects of craving or striving for success in our work or studies. We chase after our life’s dream and yet lose ourselves along the way. We may even lose our freedom and happiness in our efforts to be mindful, to be healthy, to relieve suffering in the world, or to get enlightened. We disregard the wonders of the present moment, thinking that heaven and the ultimate are for later, not for now.
To practice meditation means to have the time to look deeply and see these things. If you feel restless in the here and now, or you feel ill at ease, you need to ask yourself: “What am I longing for?” “What am I searching for?” “What am I waiting for?- Thich Nhat Hanh, in “The Art of Living” -

He
who looks in the mirror of the water, first sees his own image.
He who looks at himself, risks to meet himself.
The mirror does not flatter, it shows accurately what is reflected in it, namely that face that we never show the world because we hide it by the persona, the mask of the actor.
This is the first test of courage on the inner path, a test, which is enough to frighten most people, because the encounter with oneself belongs to those unpleasant things, one avoids as long as one can project the negative onto the environment.
Carl Jung

'I have in my own heart a world that is deep, dark and rich.
And you, in your heart, have a world that is also deep, dark and rich.
So in that sense, even if I am living in Tokyo, and you are living in New York, Timbukto or Reykjavik, Iceland, it means that we each hold inside ourselves something that is the same in nature or quality, regardless of place.
And if we trace that quality to a much deeper place, we will discover we live in a common world.

Look again at that dot.
That's here.
That's home.
That's us.
On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives.
The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam...
Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and in triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.
Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot.
How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.
Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark...this distant image of our tiny world...to me, underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

What If?
What if our religion was each other?
If our practice was our life?
If prayer was our words?
What if the Temple was the Earth?
If forests were our church?
If holy water—the rivers, lakes and oceans?
What if meditation was our relationships?
If the Teacher was life?
If wisdom was self-knowledge?
If love was the center of our being…
