For last year's words belong to last year's language,

And next year's words await another voice,

And to make an end is to make a beginning.

- T.S. Eliot - Four Quartets -

I believe that we, this planet, hasn't seen its golden age.

Everybody says it's finished...

art's finished, rock and roll is dead...

fuck that!

This is my chance in the world.

I didn't live back there in Mesopotamia.

I wasn't there in the Garden of Eden.

I wasn't there with Emperor Han.

I'm here right now and I want now to be the golden age...

If only every generation would realize

that the time for greatness is right now when they're alive...

the time to flower is now.

There will always be an infinity of things to do.

We can never get our life or our business or our kitchen running exactly the way we want it to run. No matter how we envision it, it can’t be that way.

Life is not predetermined to the point that we can get to some stage and then see how it all works.

What happens is that we have a better and better understanding of things, we have more and more clarity and ability to deal with things as they arise. But they keep arising, endlessly.

The empty sky is always creating new clouds.

Hoop draagt een pak van veren,

zit in de ziel

en zingt onvermoeibaar

een deuntje zonder woorden;

maar in de storm

is zijn gezang het zachtst.

The most beautiful gift of this wintertime

is ultimately something that is unspeakable;

 it is only livable.

The winter is actually begging you

to just let go, and then let go of letting go.

Let this natural and spontaneous returning

to the root of your own existence happen.

Return to that which is not definable.

I hope you know this: this year wasn't just about the hardships you have faced, the times you fell down or the mistakes you have made.

This year was also about how much you have grown, all the progress you have made and the stronger you have become along the way.

Please don't be hard on yourself just because a year from your life did not turn out exactly the way you had planned.

Trust that maybe through this year of struggle, letting go and change life was teaching you how to believe, how to be strong and brave for the rest of the journey ahead.

When I get confused, annoyed, or disheartened by someone’s behavior I repeat the words of Maya Angelou as my affirmation of truth:

“When people show you who they are believe them.”🌼

Some people will burn the bridge,

then ask why you don't visit.

Night is purer than day;

it is better for thinking, loving, and dreaming.

At night everything is more intense, more true.

The echo of words

that have been spoken during the day

takes on a new and deeper meaning.

 Opinions divide. Empathy connects.

Opinions are easy. Empathy is work.

Opinions keep us stuck. Empathy promotes growth.⁣

Leading through hard things with empathy is not easy.

But I believe it’s the bigger picture of growth and healing.

If we meet hard things with opinions,

we have ego work to do. ⁣

I don’t care about someone being intelligent;

any situation between people,

when they are really human with each other,

produces 'intelligence'.

Woede over hoe de dingen nu zijn

I think if you can take care of yourself,

that's sort of how you're supposed to live.

We enter that strange period between Christmas and New Year, when time seems to muddle, and we find ourselves asking again and again, What day is it? What date? I always mean to work on these days, or at least to write, but this year, like every other, I find myself unable to gather up the necessary intent.

I used to think that these were wasted days, but I now realise that’s the point.

I am doing nothing very much, not even actively being on holiday.

I clear out my cupboards, ready for another year’s onslaught of cooking and eating.

I take Bert out to play with friends.

I go for cold walks that make my ears ache.

I am not being lazy.

 I’m not slacking.

I’m just letting my attention shift for a while, away from the direct ambitions of the rest of my year.

It’s like revving my engines.

Labi Siffre - Something Inside So Strong (with lyrics)

In the general uproar of gifts and unwinding of wrappers

it was always a delight for me to step out on the porch

or even go out on the street a ways at one o’clock in the morning

and listen to the silent hum of heaven diamond stars,

watch the red and green windows of homes,

consider the trees that seemed frozen in sudden devotion,

and think over the events of another year passed.

Who Am I?

Who am I to spout about life, love, happiness?

About whether all’s right with the world, or whether it’s just a vale of tears...

I think it’s unbelievable, fabulous, this life of ours…everything, the birds and the bees, the deer and the antelope, the spacious skies, the foggy dew, the rockabye babies…

My wife’s embrace, a landing on the moon, space, time, eternity.

I don’t understand one damn thing about any of it, except that it’s enough to keep me in a constant delirium of delight, surprise, enthusiasm, despair, enough to keep me roaming, stumbling, faltering, cursing, adoring, hating the destruction, the violence in myself and others.

How do you let go of attachments to things?

 Don’t even try.

 It’s impossible.

Attachment to things drops away by itself

when you no longer seek to find yourself in them.

we can give the next generation.

Every so often, stop all that doing for a bit.

There is presence in this moment

and no worries about the future.

There is peace, contentment, warmth, and happiness,

just here,

just as you are.

 Empathy has no script.

There is no right way or wrong way to do it.

It's simply listening,

holding space,

withholding judgment,

emotionally connecting,

and communicating that incredibly healing message of

'you are not alone.'

Dat leidt me af. Ik prijs mezelf ook bijzonder gelukkig dat ik zo goed omringd ben. Ik sta niet alleen in de wereld. Eenzaamheid is volgens mij van het ergste dat een mens kan overkomen. Zelf had ik me nooit eenzaam gevoeld.

Don't search for the answers,

which could not be given to you now,

because you would not be able to live them...

the point is, to live everything.

Live the questions now.

Perhaps then, someday far in the future,

you will gradually,

without even noticing it,

live your way into the answer.
