PRENTAL LAMENT
My boy is sleeping safe in bed
Without a tumour in his head.

No hepatitis, septicaemia.
No lymphoma, no leukaemia.

His heart is strong, his breathing sure.
The marrow in his bones is pure.

No ADD, MS, ME,
CF, MD or HIV.

We drove him safely to his school,
And back again. He swam the pool

Untroubled, laughing, loving it.
No seizure, stroke or fatal fit.

No aircraft engine yet has failed.
No train come lethally derailed.

He moves from trampoline to tree
To bicycle, to skate and ski,

Unharmed, unruffled, innocent.
No injury. No accident.

He sleeps. We sleep. Another day
Is passed in ease. We made more hay.

No horror here, no sudden shark.
No plunge into the depthless dark.

No slip from sunshine into sorrow.
But there’s always tomorrow.
Always tomorrow

“It is hard to let old beliefs go. They are familiar. We are comfortable with them and have spent years building systems and developing habits that depend on them. Like a man who has worn eyeglasses so long that he forgets he has them on, we forget that the world looks to us the way it does because we have become used to seeing it that way through a particular set of lenses. Today, however, we need new lenses. And we need to throw the old ones away.”

We usually do not look into what is really there in front of us.
We see life through a screen of thoughts and concepts,
and we mistake those mental objects for reality.
We get so caught up in this endless thought-stream
that reality flows by unnoticed.
We spend our time engrossed in activity,
caught up in an eternal flight from pain and unpleasantness.
We spend our energies trying to make ourselves feel better,
trying to bury our fears.
We are endlessly seeking security.
Meanwhile,
the world of real experience flows by untouched and untasted.

It is strange, the desire to show off or to be somebody.

It seems so impossibly difficult to be simple,
to be what you are, and not pretend.

To be what you are is in itself very arduous
without trying to become something, which is not difficult.

You can always pretend, put on a mask,
but to be what you are is an extremely complex affair;
because you are always changing;
you are never the same and each moment reveals a new facet,
a new depth, a new surface.

You can’t be all this at one moment for each moment brings its own change.

So if you are intelligent, you give up being anything.

Oh, the coming-out-of-nowhere moment
when, nothing happens
no what-have-I-to-do-today-list
maybe half a moment
the rush of traffic stops.
The whir of I should be, I should be, I should be
slows to silence,
the white cotton curtains hanging still.

That’s the big question,
the one the world throws at you every morning.

“Here you are, alive. Would you like to make a comment?”

Dustin O'Halloran — We Move Lightly

Gradually, as you remain open and mindful, and use a technique to focus your mind more and more, your negativity will slowly be defused; you begin to feel well in your own skin, or, as the French say, être bien dans sa peau (“well in your own skin”). From this comes release and a profound ease. I think of this practice as the most effective form of therapy and self-healing.

R.I.P. Oscar Niemeyer

Architecture was my way of expressing my ideals: to be simple, to create a world equal to everyone, to look at people with optimism, that everyone has a gift. I don’t want anything but general happiness. Why is that bad?

It is not the right angle that attracts me, nor the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. What attracts me is the free and sensual curve — the curve that I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuous course of its rivers, in the body of the beloved woman.

We did not come to remain whole.
We came to lose our leaves like the trees,
The trees that are broken
And start again, drawing up on great roots.

It is important to reflect calmly, again and again, that death is real and comes without warning.

Don’t be like the pigeon in the Tibetan proverb: He spends all night fussing about, making his bed, and dawn comes up before he has even had time to go to sleep.

Ray LaMontagne - Within You

With every rising of the sun,
Think of your life as just begun.
The past has shrived and buried deep
All yesterdays there let them sleep.
Concern yourself with but today.

Do what you love.
Know your own bone;
gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it,
and gnaw it still.

Fresh

To move
Cleanly.
Needing to be
Nowhere else.
Wanting nothing
From any store.
To lift something
You already had
And set it down in
A new place.
Awakened eye
Seeing freshly.
What does that do to
The old blood moving through
Its channels?
