Weinig observatie en veel redeneren

 leidt tot fouten;

vele observaties en weinig redeneren

 tot de waarheid.

  -Alexis Carrel-

Before I go

I’m supposed to get a last wish:

Generous reader

burn this book

It’s not at all what I wanted to say

Though it was written in blood

It’s not what I wanted to say.

No lot could be sadder than mine

I was defeated by my own shadow:

My words took vengeance on me.

Forgive me, reader, good reader

If I cannot leave you

With a warm embrace, I leave you

With a forced and sad smile.

Maybe that’s all I am

But listen to my last word:

I take back everything I’ve said.

With the greatest bitterness in the world

I take back everything I’ve said.

— translated by Miller Williams

Drama usually comes from my reaction

 to other people’s actions.

I stop to think:

Does this really matter in the long run,

or am I just trying to be right?

- Anita Grimm-Hohl -

I zoom out in my mind to a point far enough away and above

so that I can see things in my life for what they are.

By doing this,

I can see from a distance

how small and unimportant the situation is

in the big scope of the universe.

- Larry Stilts -

I minimize drama within myself.

 When I’m focused and calm,

so is the world around me.

Whoever debases others
is debasing himself.

- James Baldwin -

Whether we like it or not,
We have only three choices:
Yesterday, today and tomorrow.

And not even three
Because as the philosopher says
Yesterday is yesterday
It belongs to us only in memory:
From the rose already plucked
No more petals can be drawn.

The cards to play
Are only two:
The present and the future.

And there aren't even two
Because it's a known fact
The present doesn't exist
Except as it edges past
And is consumed...,
like youth.

In the end
We are only left with tomorrow.
I raise my glass
To the day that never arrives.

But that is all
we have at our disposal.

Noch te pienter noch volledig dom,

ik was wat ik was: een mengsel.

 Van azijn en olijfolie.

-Nicanor Parra-

At present, our body is undoubtedly the center of our whole universe. We associate it, without thinking, with our self and our ego, and this thoughtless and false association continually reinforces our illusion of their inseparable, concrete existence. Because our body seems so convincingly to exist, our “I” seems to exist, and “you” seem to exist, and the entire illusory, dualistic world we never stop projecting around us looks ultimately solid and real.
When we die, this whole compound construction falls dramatically to pieces.

- Sogyal Rinpoche -

Find the time to read,
 to smell the flowers,
to paint your dreams,
to have coffee with a friend,
to learn a new craft,
to write a letter,
 to bake a surprise cake,
 to go somewhere special,
to really be with the person you love,
or even do nothing for a while…⠀

Depression is such a cruel punishment.

There are no fevers, no rashes, no blood tests to send people scurrying in concern - just the slow erosion of self as insidious as cancer. and like cancer, it is essentially a solitary experience; a room in hell with only your name on the door.

Tuck yourself into bed,

 reflect back on your day

and learn the teachings it has for you,

now leave it all here,

in this day,

and fall asleep

with a mind that is clear and content.
•
Tomorrow is a new day full of possibilities.

Always find time to play

Doorstrepen wat niet van toepassing is

Wat je stem zo vlak maakt
zo ijl en zo blikkerig
dat is de angst
om iets verkeerds te zeggen
of altijd hetzelfde
of te zeggen wat iedereen zegt
of iets onbelangrijks
of kwetsbaars
of iets dat verkeerd begrepen zou kunnen worden
of de verkeerde mensen zou behagen
of iets reactionairs
of iets kitscherigs
of iets doms
iets dat uit de tijd is
iets ouds
Ben je het dan niet beu
om van louter angst
om van louter angst voor de angst
iets verkeerds te zeggen
altijd het verkeerde te zeggen?

dat we niet weten wat we willen.

Our egos are easily hurt,

and they react quickly and impulsively

in anger, fear, defensiveness, exaggeration, frustration,

 self-preservation, insecurity, and self-pity.

But all that drama can be avoided,

or at least minimized,

with a little self-awareness.

People try to get away from it all — to the country, to the beach, to the mountains.

You always wish that you could too.

Which is idiotic: you can get away from it anytime you like.

 By going within.

Nowhere you can go is more peaceful — more free of interruptions — than your own soul.

Especially if you have other things to rely on.

An instant’s recollection and there it is: complete tranquility.

Many of us wait till there's some kind of tragedy to assess our lives & how we're spending time.

Till then, we push ourselves to do & be more, living busy, stressed & unfulfilled.

Don't wait for life to shake you alive.

Choose to focus on what matters now.

I was demanding of myself a deeper and greater honesty, more and more revelation in my work in order to give it back to people...where it goes into their lives and nourishes them and changes their direction and makes light bulbs go off in their head and makes them feel...

It strikes against the very nerves of their life and in order to do that you have to strike against the very nerves of your own.
