We
need to shake ourselves sometimes and really ask:
“What if I were to die
tonight? What then?”
We do not know whether we will wake up tomorrow, or
where.
If you breathe out and you cannot breathe in again, you are dead.
It’s as simple as that.
As
a Tibetan saying goes:
“Tomorrow or the next life—which comes first,
we never know.”

Accomplishment may be the result of ambition or
drive...
I think I probably have lots of drive.
But I don’t have any
ambition.
I never really had any...
I don’t have a hugely high opinion
of ambition.
I think of ambition as the need to prove something to
others,
and the need to be recognized.
A need for rewards outside of the
work.
Drive motivates you to do whatever it is you’re doing as well as
you can.
That’s an important distinction.

have a disciple in Vietnam who wants to build a stupa for my ashes when
I die. He and others want to include a plaque with the words “Here lies
my beloved teacher.” I told them not to waste the temple land. “Do not
put me in a small pot and put me in there!” I said. “I don’t want to
continue like that. It would be better to scatter the ashes outside to
help the trees to grow.”
I suggested that, if they still insist on building a stupa, they have the plaque say, “I am not in here.” But in case people don’t get it, they could add a second plaque, “I am not out there either.” If people still don’t understand, then you can write on the third and last plaque, “I may be found in your way of breathing and walking.”

Mon fils, pourquoi les hommes n’entendent-ils pas la vérité ?
Premièrement parce que la vérité manque parfois d’intérêt.
Deuxièmement parce que la vérité a peu l’allure de la vérité – la plupart des faussetés sont mieux troussées.
Troisièmement, parce que la vérité déçoit alors qu’on espérait qu’elle nous régale.
Quatrièmement parce que la vérité blesse.

A memory from my youth comes back to me.
You go into
the woods on a bike, with a girl.
There is the smell of heather, you
can hear the wind in the fir trees, you don't dare tell her about your
love, but you feel happy, as if you were floating above the ground.
Then
you look at the clouds beyond the trees and they are fleeting.
And you
know that within an hour you'll have to go home, that tomorrow will be a
working day.
You wish you could stop that moment forever, but you
can't, it is bound to end.
So you take a photo, as if to challenge
time.

Ik
las laatst een interview met Margaret Atwood, waarin haar ongeveer
dezelfde vraag werd gesteld: of ze het als schrijfster haar taak vond om
geëngageerd te zijn, bezig met de problemen van vandaag.
Ik vond haar
antwoord erg goed, dus ik herhaal het even.
‘Nee,’ zei ze, ‘dat is niet
mijn taak als schrijfster, dat is mijn taak als mens.
Mijn taak als
schrijfster is ervoor te zorgen dat jij de bladzijde omslaat’.
Deze
tijd is niet alleen zorgwekkend, maar ook razend interessant.
De wereld
verandert in ijltempo.
Het is gewoon ondenkbaar dat ik die buiten mijn
boeken zou houden.

For
a table to exist, we need wood, a carpenter, time, skillfulness, and
many other causes.
And each of these causes needs other causes to be.
The wood needs the forest, the sunshine, the rain, and so on.
The
carpenter needs his parents, breakfast, fresh air, and so on.
And each
of those things, in turn, has to be brought about by other conditions.
If we continue to look in this way, we'll see that
nothing has been left out.
Everything in the cosmos has come together
to bring us this table.
Looking deeply at the sunshine, the leaves of
the tree, and the clouds, we can see the table.
The one can be seen in
the all, and the all can be seen in the one.
