It is so important that we talk openly about suicide, depression, and the urge to die. That we break the spell of shame and fear around it all, and make it safer for people of all ages to express their deepest darkest thoughts and feelings to us. To receive their pain and shame with understanding, compassion, empathy. To listen to them. To take them seriously. And to help them get help if they want it.

I have spoken to so many people across the world who think sometimes – or often - about ending their lives. The urge to die, the longing for the rest of death, the pull of Thanatos and the shining void, is an urge as old and as powerful as life itself. I know that urge intimately. I spent much of my teenage years and early twenties thinking of death. I always felt there was something horribly wrong with me. I felt so ashamed. I felt so lonely in my pain. I thought I was the only one suffering so badly.

I didn’t want anyone to see the darkness inside me. I kept it all hidden.

But my pain was not a sign of my sickness. It was a part of me simply longing for love, understanding, kind attention, safety, home. My deepest feelings of unworthiness, my darkest terrors, my frustrations and anxieties – who would listen? Who would embrace the unworthy one? Who would shower the unloveable one with curiosity? Put their arms around the failed one? Hold me like a baby, let me weep and rage and come to rest?

When we push away our inner child - with their valid tears and shame and rage - deeper and deeper into the darkness of the unconscious, life becomes more and more unliveable.

It doesn’t matter how ‘good’ our lives seem on the surface. It doesn’t matter how successful we are, how much money we have, how much recognition we get, how many people adore us, how much we fill our days with usefulness and productivity. In the end, what we deny in ourselves will kill us – through addiction, through suicide, or simply through stress, exhaustion and boredom. That is a kind of suicide, too: a long, slow, giving-up on life. Living, half-alive, repressing our authentic selves, our creativity and our sense of play.

Look beyond the surface – we all have an inner child that longs to be met.

And the night is as beautiful as the daytime, and holds such healing power, if we can enter it with consciousness and love.

because to them all of it has always been big stuff.

It's more difficult to understand.

 I don’t control life.

I control my reactions and actions

 but not much else.

When I try to manipulate life, people and places,

I end up exhausted.

It’s not my domain.

It’s not up to me to control outcomes.

I believe in all that has never yet been spoken

I believe in all that has never yet been spoken.
I want to free what waits within me
so that what no one has dared to wish for

may for once spring clear

without my contriving.

If this is arrogant, God, forgive me,

but this is what I need to say.

May what I do flow from me like a river,

no forcing and no holding back,

the way it is with children.

Then in these swelling and ebbing currents,

these deepening tides moving out, returning,

I will sing you as no one ever has,

streaming through widening channels
into the open sea.

When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand.

The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.

- Henri Nouwen -

Oscar Wilde said that if you know what you want to be,

 then you inevitably become it…

that is your punishment,

but if you never know, then you can be anything.

There is a truth to that.

We are not nouns, we are verbs.

 I am not a thing…an actor, a writer…

I am a person who does things…

I write, I act…and I never know what I am going to do next.

I think you can be imprisoned if you think of yourself as a noun.

What if parenting became less about telling our children who they should be and more about asking them again and again forever who they already are?

Then, when they tell us, we would celebrate instead of concede.

It’s not: I love you no matter which of my expectations you meet or don’t meet.

It’s: My only expectation is that you become yourself.

The more deeply I know you, the more beautiful you become to me.

As is steen

Ik ben de wereld
zowat overal
te lijf gegaan,
en als het nacht was
dacht ik: morgen
ga ik weer.
Pas als ik sterf
leg ik me erbij neer
dat ik bij leven
hard als steen lijk,
maar vergankelijk
ben als gras,
en dat mijn vuist,
net als mijn vloek,
niet meer is dan
een handvol as.

 I Heard a Bird Sing

 I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

"We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,”
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

It is important to reflect calmly,

 again and again,

that death is real and comes without warning.

Don’t be like the pigeon in the Tibetan proverb:

He spends all night fussing about, making his bed,

 and dawn comes up

before he has even had time to go to sleep.
