Fear and anxiety can drive us to become very self-focused. This global pandemic is a real case of “getting sick together” or “staying well together.” ⁣

Our choices affect everyone around us. There is no such thing as “individual risk” or “individual wellness.” ⁣
⁣
This is the ultimate reminder that we are inextricably connected to each other. Turning away from collective action right now - as tempting as it is - will only generate more pain. ⁣

Owning and embracing our global interconnectedness (from a safe distance) and thinking about others as we make choices is, ironically, our only path to safety for ourselves and the people we love. ⁣

We can all get really shitty really fast when we’re afraid. I get it. I’m using deep breaths along with my personal mantra: ” Try to be scared without being scary.” Feel free to borrow both - they can help.⁣

It’s also really normal for everyone to be on our nerves: The people who aren’t following the rules, the 10-second hand washers, etc. I get that too. TRUST ME. ⁣

Accepting that life is fragile can be scary, but it can be empowering as well.

Ik weet niet meer waar ik dit voor het eerst gehoord of gelezen heb, en dus ook niet wie dit bedacht heeft. Voor mij is het wel een kernachtige samenvatting van de keuze waar we voor staan.

In die zin is wat vandaag gebeurt met het Corona-virus erg leerrijk. Een op zich niet zo gevaarlijk virus (bijvoorbeeld in vergelijking met de griep) dat ons dwingt om een aantal zaken die we als vanzelfsprekend aannemen overboord te gooien. Tevens wordt duidelijk hoe in een complexe en hyper-geconnecteerde wereld dominosteentjes snel kunnen vallen.

Al jaren is duidelijk dat massatoerisme en steeds meer vliegen een negatieve impact heeft op het klimaat. Maar alle pleidooien voor vliegtuigtaksen of beperking van luchtverkeer ten spijt bleef de sector snel groeien. En kijk, nu worden we gedwongen vakanties en vluchten te annuleren. Duizenden vliegtuigen staan aan de grond, vele bekende toeristische trekpleisters zijn verlaten. Luxueuze cruise-schepen zullen een tijdlang het beeld van een Corona-cruise met zich meedragen. Misschien zou dit wel eens een flinke duw kunnen geven aan meer lokaal en duurzaam toerisme.

En dan is er de globale economie. Doorheen de geschiedenis is er alvast één relatie constant. Economische groei zorgt voor een stijging van broeikasgassen. Er zijn de voorbije decennia maar twee momenten waarop de CO2 concentraties stagneerden. In 1990-91 met de inéénstorting van de USSR (en bijhorende zware industrie) en in 2008-2009 met de nasleep van de financiële crisis. Het ziet er naar uit dat we nu een derde moment van daling beleven. Niet door een of ander internationaal klimaatakkoord maar omdat we gedwongen worden door een microscopisch klein stukje erfelijk materiaal. Omdat het om een plotse en gedwongen vermindering van productie en consumptie gaat zorgt dit voor een heleboel ongemak en miserie.

De term Zwarte Zwaan is de voorbije dagen al meermaals in mijn hoofd opgedoken. Nassim Nicholas Taleb beschreef in 2007 hoe onvoorspelbare gebeurtenissen (Zwarte Zwanen) een enorme impact kunnen hebben en achteraf aannemelijk en voorspelbaar worden gemaakt. Die complexiteit in combinatie met het toeval (bijvoorbeeld een afgesprongen oliedeal tussen Rusland en Saudie-Arabië) zorgt voor vaak onvoorspelbare effecten en kettingreacties.

• plots worden telewerken en internationale teleconferenties wél mogelijk
• plots zitten miljoenen gezinnen samen thuis om tijd met elkaar door te brengen
• de luchtkwaliteit in de regio tussen Beijing en Shanghai is merkbaar beter geworden
• overal gaan stemmen om om de gezondheidszorg te versterken in plaats van verder af te bouwen
• plots beseffen we dat we moeite hebben om iets simpel als een mondkapje hier te produceren omdat het economisch verstandig leek dit uit te besteden
• plots is wel belangrijk dat we een sterke overheid hebben die de nodige maatregelen neemt
• en wie weet is de herverkiezing van Trump toch niet zo zeker, want als ook de Amerikaanse economie in recessie gaat zijn populariteit meteen kelderen

Natuurlijk, het gedwongen stilleggen van een stuk van de wereldeconomie gaat kan ook in andere richting negatieve effecten met zich meebrengen.

• de aandacht voor de dringende klimaatactie wordt minder (en zoals bleek na de financiële crisis van 2008, zal veel geld gaan naar de heropstart van de economie, en is er alweer minder voor de transitie)
• er is ook minder aandacht voor andere dringende zaken (zoals de situatie van vluchtelingen aan de Grieks-Turkse grens)
• als de ergste effecten van het virus voorbij zijn zou het kunnen dat er een versnelling komt van productie en consumptie met opnieuw een opstoot van broeikasgassen
• de dalende olieprijs is niet goed voor de verdere ontwikkeling van hernieuwbare energie. (en zorgt voor vreemde krantenkoppen als deze)

Kortom, deze hele crisis houdt ons een spiegel voor, en maakt duidelijk hoe wankel onze levensstijl uiteindelijk is. Laten ons hopen dat het virus snel verdwijnt maar we nog lang beseffen dat een meer lokale en minder op groei gerichte economie misschien wel de beste manier is om meer veerkracht te ontwikkelen. Want er zijn zonder twijfel nog Zwarte Zwanen op komst.

Dear Ones

For now, the only thing I have to say about the Coronavirus is this: Let’s not judge people too fiercely for how they are reacting to this situation.

 It may be the case that people are overreacting, or it may be that they are under-reacting....it’s not my place to judge that.

 I don’t have all the answers and I can’t see into the future—no more than anybody else can. 

But I do know that when I add my condemnation to the conversation, it just ratchets up hysteria in a different way—and most of all, it’s not kind. 

 If you believe that somebody is overreacting, just try to remember that another word for “overreaction” is “fear”. 

Try to be compassionate, not contemptuous. 

We don’t all share the same fears, but we all know what fear feels like, and it’s a terrible sensation.

 I wouldn’t wish fear on anybody, and I know that a lot of people are genuinely afraid right now.

 I have no way of knowing how many people are going to suffer physically from this virus, but I do know that millions of people are already suffering from it emotionally—and those people need love, not contempt. 

Those people are my brothers and sisters.

 Let me never forget my compassion for their anxiety, rather than telling them how they should or should not be feeling. 

And let me also show a strong measure of mercy to the people across the world who are running institutions, schools, governments, and companies right now. 

 Those people are faced with the supremely unenviable task of trying to figure out how to respond to this crisis responsibly. 

There is no playbook. 

They will make mistakes. 

They will overreact; they will under react. 

They are human beings in an impossible dilemma. 

I would not wish to be the person faced with such massive, impactful decisions right now. 

Let me show compassion to them. 

Let me show compassion to all. 

And let me never stop asking: “How can I help?”
