So when people say that poetry is a luxury, or an
option, or for the educated middle classes, or that it shouldn’t be
read at school because it is irrelevant, or any of the strange stupid
things that are said about poetry and its place in our lives, I suspect
that the people doing the saying have had things pretty easy.
A tough life needs a tough language – and that is what poetry is.
That is what literature offers – a language powerful enough to say how it is.
It isn’t a hiding place. It is a finding place.

I always thought my days spent in darkness as a child
gave me a very special sensitivity.
Much later, when I really wanted to
hear, really 'see' a song,
I'd close my eyes.
And when I wanted to bring
it out of the very depths of myself, out of my guts, out of my belly,
when the song had to come from far away, I'd close my eyes.

I
have come to accept the feeling of not knowing where I am going.
And I have trained myself to love it.
Because it is only when we are suspended in mid-air with no landing in sight, that we force our wings to unravel and alas begin our flight.
And as we fly, we still may not know where we are going to.
But the miracle is in the unfolding of the wings.
You may not know where you're going, but you know that so long as you spread your wings, the winds will carry you.

If you are miserable you are miserable; that is
the reality, that is what is happening, so confront that.
Look it square
in the eye without flinching.
When you are having a bad time, examine
that experience, observe it mindfully, study the phenomenon and learn
its mechanics.
The way out of a trap is to study the trap itself, learn
how it is built.
You do this by taking the thing apart piece by piece.
The trap can’t trap you if it has been taken to pieces.
The result is
freedom.

I think of myself as somebody not at home, I suppose.
Not at home anywhere, not at home ever...not comfortable in themselves
in their supposed lives, in their nation, in their bodies, in
everything.
There are lots of people who feel very certain about
themselves, where they're born, what it means.
I never felt that way...
I
don't think of that as a negative feeling.
To me, it's creative.
It's
the people who feel that they belong very strongly who put the fear of
God into me, to be honest.

We do not grow absolutely, chronologically.
We grow
sometimes in one dimension and not another…unevenly.
We grow partially.
We are relative.
We mature in one realm, childish in another.
The past,
present and future mingle and pull us backward, forward or fix us in the
present.
We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.

A Sufi mystic was entering a village and he came across a small
boy who was carrying a lit candle. The boy was going to the mosque. The
night was coming and the boy was going to the mosque to put the candle
there – as an act of worship.
The mystic saw the boy, the innocent boy, his face lit by the light of the candle. The mystic asked the boy, ’Have you yourself lighted the candle?’ And the boy said, ’Yes, sir.’
The mystic jokingly asked, ’Then you must have seen from where the flame comes. Can you tell me from where the flame comes?’
The boy laughed and blew out the candle and said, ’Now you have seen it going. Can you tell me where it has gone?’

Be a watcher.
Pleasure comes – watch.
Pain comes – watch.
Neither be disturbed by
pleasure nor be disturbed by pain.
Let your calm remain unperturbed.
Let
your silence, your tranquillity, remain undisturbed.
Pain will come and
go and pleasure will come and go.
Success will come and go and failure
will come and go.
And soon you will come to understand the point that it
is only you who remains.

All the things you can talk about in anyone's work are
the things that are least important...
You can describe all the
externals of a performance...everything, in fact, but what really
constitutes its core.
Explaining something makes it go away, so to
speak; what's important is what's left over after you've explained
everything else.

My whole life I’ve been telling myself, ‘don’t be afraid’.
And it is only now that I’m realizing how stupid that is.
Don’t be afraid.
Like saying, ‘don’t move out of the way when someone tries to punch you’ or ‘don’t flinch at the heat of fire’ or ‘don’t blink’.
Don’t be human.
I’m afraid and you’re afraid and we’re all always going to be afraid, because that’s the point.
What I should be telling myself is ‘be afraid, but do it anyway’.
Live anyway.

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us
'Universe'...
He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as
something separated from the rest — a kind of optical delusion of his
consciousness.
This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us
to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to
us.
Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our
circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of
nature...
Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but striving for
such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a
foundation for inner security.
