This is my depressed stance.
When you’re depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand.
The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you’ll start to feel better.
If you’re going to get any joy out of being depressed, you’ve got to stand like this

Geluk dus:
Sommige mensen zouden zeggen dat ik een ongelukkig jeugd heb gehad. Als op internaat zitten vanaf je vierde levensjaar, je vakanties bij je grootouders doorbrengen omdat je moeder permanent ziek is of op je zeventiende van school gegooid worden een jeugd ongelukkig maken, dan val ik daaronder. Zelf verkies ik om het een onconventionele jeugd te noemen.

Ik denk dat mijn ervaringen mee hebben bepaald dat ik later zo goed zou aarden in het zogezegd harde New York. Ik herinner me dat ik al van heel jongs af door het vernis zag van 'gelukkige gezinnen' en 'gelukkige mensen'. Het gevolg is dat ik een volwassene ben geworden die mensen die geobsedeerd zijn door 'gelukkig zijn', dom en kleingeestig vind.

Gustave Flaubert zei duizend keer beter wat ik zelf heel intens voel omtrent 'geluk': 'To be stupid, selfish, and have good health are three requirements for happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, all is lost.'

Onze maatschappij is daar niet op ingesteld, op alleen zijn, maar wat is daar in godsnaam mis mee? Het is toch veel beter dan bij iemand zijn die niets toevoegt aan je leven? Overigens ben je in wezen altijd alleen, ook in een relatie. Maar dat hoeft niet zo verschrikkelijk te zijn als het klinkt. Voor mij betekent het dat ik nooit helemaal kan verwoorden wat er in mijn hoofd omgaat.

Sinds De melkweg (zijn laatste roman) besef ik ineens dat ik zelf met z'n drieën ben. Iemand die ondergaat, iemand die zegt: "Doen!", en nog iemand die de situatie overschouwt, de slimste is en er boven staat.
