We often talk about empathy as an emotional virtue,
but it’s also an imaginative art.
Before I can empathize with you,
you have to become real to me.
I have to listen to you, I have to tell myself your story.
I have to imagine what it is like to be you with your illness
or your situation or your aspirations or whatever it is.
 If you don’t have empathy,
other people might not exist for you.

My dad always used to say:

“If you’re falling off a cliff,
you may as well try to fly.
You have nothing to lose.”

We must abandon completely the notion of blaming the past
for any kind of situation we're in
and reverse our thinking
and see that the past always flows back form the present.

That now is the creative point of life.

So you see its like the idea of forgiving somebody,
you change the meaning of the past by doing that...

Also watch the flow of music.
The melody as its expressed is changed by notes that come later.
Just as the meaning of a sentence...
you wait till later to find out what the sentence means...

The present is always changing the past.

NOT KNOWING

how would it be to allow for knowing
and not knowing:
allowing room
for the mystery
of creating
to be able to wonder
softly
without needing to understand everything
to trust in the process
to trust in love
to trust in the mystery and wonder
of the universe
that beats softly wildly
true
all round about us,
that is hidden
in the mists
in the clouds and the rain
in the wind blowing and the rain lashing down on your window,
reminding you
poetically
prosaically
that this is where you are,
on the island,
at the edge,
in a place of finding
and refinding,
and remembering
to remember
the feel of the mist, wind and rain.

- John O’Donohue -

When we have to deal with someone who is very different from ourselves, we tend to retreat to distancing strategies.
We see differences and immediately pull back into ourselves.
We secretly and silently affirm who and what we are and our way of doing things, and we judge the other person for being different.
Why are we so afraid?  Do we have to remake everyone else in our own image to feel comfortable with them?

Forgiveness

means letting go

Het ergste dat ons kan overkomen

is dat ons niets meer overkomt.

Attitude is more important
than the past,
than education,
than money,
than circumstances,
than what people do or say.
 It is more important
than appearance,
giftedness,
or skill.

Bedankt Frieda!

A 'No'
uttered from deepest conviction
is better and greater
than a 'Yes'
merely uttered to please,
 or what is worse,
to avoid trouble.
