COMPASSION
In some ways, it’s what’s called enabling.
It’s the general tendency to give people what they want
because you can’t bear to see them suffering.
Basically, you’re not giving them what they need.
You’re trying to get away from your feeling
of I can’t bear to see them suffering.
In other words, you’re doing it for yourself.
You’re not really doing it for them.

Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending
our lives running from it.
Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but
not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the
experiences that make us the most vulnerable.
Only when we are brave
enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of
our light.”

Every one of us is called upon, perhaps many times, to start a new life.
A frightening diagnosis, a marriage, a move, loss of a job...
And onward full-tilt we go, pitched and wrecked and absurdly resolute, driven in spite of everything to make good on a new shore.
To be hopeful, to embrace one possibility after another--that is surely the basic instinct...
Crying out: High tide! Time to move out into the glorious debris. Time to take this life for what it is.
