The best part of the journey

 is the surprise and wonder

 along the way.

How can you allow this moment?

How can you accept it?

Wouldn’t you have to be separate from it, to allow it?

How can you allow the air, the rain, the grass as it grows?

How can you allow the breath in your lungs?

Isn’t it already allowed?

Isn’t life already exactly as it is?

How can you allow or disallow what is already here?

Isn’t it already too late to accept or reject this moment?

How can you surrender to that which you were never separate from in the first place?

Hasn’t the deepest acceptance already happened?

Don’t just do something, sit there!

Sit there long enough each morning

to decide what is really important

 during the day ahead.

When we are angry, when we are excited, when we are depressed, when we are elated, we are completely submerged in and identified with those thoughts and feelings.

 This is why we suffer.

We suffer because we are completely identified with our thoughts and feelings and we think this is me.

This is who I am.

“My kids are starting to notice I'm a little different from the other dads. ‘Why don't you have a straight job like everyone else?’ they asked me the other day.

I told them this story:

In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, ‘Look at me...I'm tall, and I'm straight, and I'm handsome. Look at you...you're all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you.’ And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, ‘Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest.’ So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day.”

I have learned that when sadness comes to visit me,

all I can do is say “I see you.”

I spend some time with it, get up, and say goodbye.

I don’t push it away.

 I own it.

And because I own it, I let it go.

 Life is stressful.

 It's busy.

We fill the space.

We have to breathe.

 We have to apologize.

We have to remember to be kind when we don't have time.

Hardest of all, we have to be kind to ourselves.

As they say in Buddhism, if we lose our mind, come back.

 We will lose our minds.

We won't, ever, be perfect.

All we can do is get back up and come back to this moment and do our best, and better.

And sometimes our best, and better, means giving ourselves a break, or being kind to someone else, or finding our joy in a moment of gap, instead of filling the space

There’s a lot you can learn from the flowers…

A time of new growth, a fresh start, buds stretching skyward after a long winter’s sleep.

Flowers are evidence enough that the rain will end, the clouds will part, and spring will always come, no matter the difficult winter that precedes it.

Keep on stretching towards the sun like the flowers do.

They know that rain is fuel and that storms do pass.

Trust in the rhythms of life.

I hope you are blessed with a heart like a wildflower.

Strong enough to rise again after being trampled on, tough enough to weather the worst of the summer storms, and able to grow and flourish even in the most broken places.

 Truly,

we live with mysteries too marvelous

 to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing

in the mouths of the lambs.

How rivers and stones

are forever in allegiance with gravity

while we ourselves dream of rising.
