Leisure

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson -
"Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there.

It doesn't matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away. The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said. The lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime."

Ik heb zes eerlijke dienaars.

Zij leerden mij alles wat ik weet;

Look at the sky: that is for you.
Look at each person's face as you pass on the street: those faces are for you.
And the street itself, and the ground under the street, and the ball of fire underneath the ground:
all these things are for you.
There are as much for you as they are for other people.
Remember this when you wake up in the morning and think you have nothing.

- Miranda July - No one belongs here more than you -

Door naar mezelf te luisteren
en bij mezelf naar binnen te gaan,
kan ik mezelf openen
om te luisteren naar anderen
en mezelf te verbinden
met alles rondom mij.

Nothing is cheaper than words, however sophisticated, however impassioned, because talk never equals action, ever.
We can get all wrapped up in billowy thoughts of world peace, or we can manufacture peace in our own little corners of the world this very minute with achievable acts of kindness toward family members, neighbors, co-workers, store clerks, philosophers of all stripes, and, if we’re really serious about it, our enemies.
The ways we miss our lives are life.
